Chapter 20

Shannon walked several blocks to the Sheriff's office in town. She wasn't sure exactly what she was going to say, but she wanted the insanity to end today. Even though she knew she couldn't ever bring back her father she felt that she could shed some light on the murder of her great grandmother. The man who haunted her dreams at night and her visions by day was going to have a reckoning whether he wanted it or not.

Sheriff Hurley sat bleary eyed at his desk and didn't seem surprised to see Shannon walk in the station door at 7:15 am. "So Shannon," he said as she stood in front of his desk, "what gets you up so early this morning?" "I am here to tell you who murdered Annabelle Lee Edmondson." The Sheriff took this in for a minute then said, "Oh, really? Funny, I thought that little mystery had been solved about a hundred years ago." He chuckled a little at her expense but she was unwavering. "Your office thinks it solved that murder but they were wrong."

The Sheriff thought this was amusing but his nerves were on edge and he really wanted to go home and get some sleep. "Well, I'd like to hear all about it, but not right now. I'm in the middle of another investigation. As you may well know, Sheriff Cline killed himself last night and Edna Moore is fit to be tied. I have all I can handle for the time being. Why don't you come back another day and we'll talk?" he said getting up from his chair and preparing to show her to the door.

Shannon braced herself for a fight and decided to start talking, whether he wanted to hear it or not. "Wait a minute, please," she started. "I know this sounds crazy but Mr. Chickless didn't murder my great-grandmother." The Sheriff paused for a moment knowing he couldn't get her to shut up now. "The real murderer is." and Roy Schwartz came in and interrupted her. "Sheriff, Hazel Middleton's lawyer just got here. I thought you would want to talk to him."
